Eyewear product photography is the image set that sells frames online: a white-background packshot, a three-quarter angle, a temple profile, a lens detail, and a worn shot on a face. Two things make it harder than most categories. The lens is a regulated component whose appearance carries a product claim, and the brand name on the temple arm is the smallest type most generative models can hold.
Every eyewear photography guide opens on the same problem. Reflections. Use a big diffused source, move it off-axis, wipe the lenses with a microfiber cloth, bring a polariser. That advice is correct and it solves about a third of the job.

What is eyewear product photography?
Eyewear product photography produces the commercial images a frame brand lists and advertises with. It splits into three groups.
Off-face packshots show the frame alone: front-on, three-quarter, folded, and a temple profile that reveals the hinge and the arm branding. Detail shots cover what justifies the price, which means the hinge, the acetate layers or wire finish, the nose pads, and the lens tint itself. Worn frames put the eyewear on a face so a buyer can read fit, width and proportion.
The category is unusual in one respect. Your subject is partly transparent, partly mirror, and carries type small enough that most cameras and most models lose it.
The lens is the regulated part of the product
Eyewear is not a neutral object in front of a camera. In the US, both sunglasses and prescription spectacle lenses are FDA Class I devices exempt from 510(k) premarket notification. Both must be fitted with impact-resistant lenses. That means the piece of your product doing the most visual work in every photograph is the piece under regulatory control.
The common assumption is that prescription eyewear sits in a heavier regulatory category than sunglasses. At the device-classification level it does not. Non-prescription sunglasses fall under 21 CFR 886.5850 and prescription spectacle lenses under 21 CFR 886.5844. Both are Class I, both are 510(k)-exempt, and both are covered by the impact-resistance requirement in 21 CFR 801.410.
What the FDA guidance says about imagery
FDA’s Guidance Document For Nonprescription Sunglasses gives a labelling claim that lenses block 100% UVA, UVB and UVC as an example that can make the device adulterated, if the statement is untrue for those sunglasses. Among its examples of false or misleading labelling it lists “deceptive pictorial matter”.
Read that precisely. The guidance is written about labelling, it dates from October 1998, and it asks sellers to review promotion, labelling and advertising material against the labelling laws. We found no FTC rule specific to sunglasses UV claims, and none about how eyewear may be depicted in ads, as of September 2026. A performance claim like “100% UV protection” falls under the FTC’s general advertising substantiation policy, which requires a reasonable basis before the claim runs.
The practical read for a photographer or a prompt: the tint density, the mirror coating and the polarisation sheen in your image describe a lens you have to be able to ship. Generating a deeper gradient than the SKU carries, or a mirror finish on a frame sold with a flat tint, turns a styling decision into a claim you cannot substantiate. That risk is identical whether a retoucher pushed it or a model invented it.
The EU standard, and one fresh change
Sunglasses sold in the EU are category I personal protective equipment under Regulation (EU) 2016/425. The international standard for sunglasses, ISO 12312-1:2022, defines five filter categories. As defined in that standard, lenses offer 100% UV protection when transmittance at wavelengths up to 380 nm is below 0.05% (Swiss Federal Office of Public Health factsheet, accessed September 2026).
Worth a diary note: an amendment, ISO 12312-1:2022/Amd 1:2026, was published in April 2026 (iso.org, accessed September 2026). If your imagery or copy states a filter category, confirm it against the amended standard before the next drop.
One more that touches the site rather than the shoot. The FTC’s Eyeglass Rule (16 CFR Part 456) requires prescribers to give patients a copy of their eyeglass prescription automatically after any refractive eye exam. A June 2024 final rule added that prescribers who also sell eyewear must ask the patient to sign a confirmation of receipt, and keep it for at least three years (ftc.gov, accessed September 2026). If you sell prescription eyewear online, your customers can take that prescription copy to any seller.

What Amazon requires for eyewear
Amazon’s general main-image rules apply: a pure white background at RGB 255, 255, 255, the product shown as 85% of the image, the whole product in frame, no part of a mannequin, and no props that are not included with the product. Images need at least 500 pixels on the longest side, and 1,000 pixels or more turn on zoom (sellercentral.amazon.com, as of September 2026). The main image must be a realistic, professional-quality image that shows the real scale, quantity and colour of the product.
Two traps sit underneath that paragraph, and both catch eyewear brands.
The eyewear category style guide is stale. Amazon still serves an Eyewear Style Guide from its image host. It asks for the product to occupy at least 80% of the image area, specifies 500-dpi and 1,000-dpi files rather than pixel dimensions, and prohibits packaging, borders, watermarks, text and lifestyle pictures (images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com, accessed September 2026). It is also copyright-stamped 2010 to 2012, and its 80% figure contradicts the current 85% standard outright. Nothing eyewear-specific is documented on models. Amazon’s current product image guide contains no mention of “eyewear” or “sunglasses”. It asks for clothing accessories and multipacks flat, without a model, and for adult clothing on a standing model. It does not say whether a frame counts as a clothing accessory, a question that also comes up for hats. Guides that tell you Amazon forbids a worn eyewear main image are reading a rule that never names the category. The honest answer is that the general main-image rules govern, and everything past that is unpublished.

The eyewear shot list
Seven frames cover a SKU. The first four are the listing, the last three are the campaign.
- Front-on packshot, white. Arms folded flat behind the front, lens plane square to the sensor. This is the Amazon hero and the PDP thumbnail.
- Three-quarter, roughly 45 degrees. The only single frame that shows front shape, lens curvature and temple arm together. Skip it and a buyer cannot judge depth or wrap.
- Temple profile. The arm, the hinge, and the branding at full length. This carries most of the perceived quality on an acetate frame.
- Folded flat lay. Both arms crossed, shot from directly overhead. Reads well in a grid and communicates the case footprint.
- Lens and hardware macro. Tint gradient, coating, hinge screws, nose pad hardware. This is where a $90 frame separates from a $290 one.
- Worn, front-on. Frame width against face width. The single image that answers “will this fit me”.
- Worn, three-quarter. Temple arm sitting over the ear, arm branding visible in context, and the depth cue the flat worn shot loses.
Two eyewear-specific notes on the worn frames. On a clear prescription lens, the buyer has to see the eyes through the glass, otherwise the frame reads as sunglasses. On a tinted or mirrored lens the opposite is true, because the tint is the product and hiding it under a face-on flash defeats the shot.
Set the shot list once, then reproduce it per colourway rather than rebuilding it. A multi-angle template makes the angle set from a single frame, and the template library has other starting points if you would rather write the brief yourself.
Reflection control, and the part guides skip
The standard advice works. Light through a large diffused source, positioned above and off-axis rather than straight on. Handle frames with microfiber gloves and wipe lenses with an anti-static cloth. Flag hotspots with a white foam board or diffusion paper close to the product. Backlighting flatters transparent elements. A polarising filter cuts what the flags miss.
Here is what almost no guide says. Zero reflection is the wrong target.
A lens photographed with every reflection suppressed goes optically dead. It reads as an empty rim, which on a listing looks like a frame shipped without lenses, and the buyer’s eye stops on the error rather than the product. A single soft, controlled highlight sitting off the centre line is what says there is glass in there.
That flips the brief on tinted, gradient and mirrored lenses. A mirror finish sells on what it reflects, so the goal becomes choosing what appears in it, not removing it. A gradient sells on the transition, which needs a light source shaped along the lens rather than fought.
The rule that holds across all of them: the reflection may not cross the eye line on a worn shot. A hotspot over the pupil takes away the one thing the worn frame exists to show.
Where generative models break on eyewear
Eyewear is a hard category for image models, and it fails in specific, checkable ways. Verify these at 100% zoom on every generated frame before it goes near a PDP.
Temple arm branding. Small type on a curved, angled surface is the hardest text an image model handles. Google’s own model page for its image model says it can “generate clear text for posters and intricate diagrams” while also stating that not every image will be perfect, and that “it can still struggle with small faces, accurate spelling, and fine details in images” (deepmind.google, accessed September 2026). Black Forest Labs states that with FLUX.2, “complex typography, infographics, memes and UI mockups with legible fine text now work reliably in production” (bfl.ai, November 2025). Check the provider’s own documentation rather than a leaderboard. ByteDance’s Seedream 4.0 page, for example, reports high scores for text rendering (seed.bytedance.com, September 2026).
Nano Banana Pro and FLUX 2 Flex both run as steps in a DesignerBox workflow. If temple branding is the deciding detail on your line, run the same brief through more than one model and compare at crop. The model list shows which models you can pick.
Invented reflections. A model will render a reflection that does not match the scene it placed the frame in: a window that is not in shot, a light shape that contradicts the key. On a mirrored lens this is a claim problem, not only an aesthetic one, because you are showing a coating behaviour the SKU may not have.
Missing lenses. Clear lenses vanish. The model renders the rim faithfully and leaves the aperture empty because a perfectly clear lens has almost no signal. It looks like a frame photographed before glazing.
Hinge and nose pad hardware. Screws, barrel hinges and adjustable pads are small metal parts that models smooth over or duplicate. Count the barrels.
Fit geometry on worn shots. The frequent failures are frame width against face width, temple arms that pass through the ear rather than over it, and nose pads floating clear of the bridge. This is the same fidelity problem covered in on-model photography with AI.
Prescription distortion. A real minus lens minifies the eye behind it and a plus lens magnifies it, with the effect visible at the rim on stronger scripts. Generated lenses almost never reproduce it. A -6.00 SKU photographed with an undistorted eye behind it is a fit misrepresentation to a buyer who knows what a strong script looks like.

What an eyewear shoot costs
There are three cost models, and they scale differently.
Per-image studio services price the frame. They quote per image, often with a higher tier for complex products such as jewellery and watches, and some sell monthly plans with a minimum commitment. Check the current rate card of the studio you buy from, because figures can differ between one company’s own pages.
Retouching-only services price the fix. Some charge a monthly subscription plus a fee for each image. The per-image charge sits on top of the subscription rather than inside it, which is easy to read the wrong way.
Generative production prices the variant. DesignerBox plans run $15 a month billed monthly for 500 credits on Basic, $35 for 1,000 on Pro, $75 for 2,500 on Premium and $200 for 8,000 on Ultra, and the free plan carries 112 credits a month. The models in a workflow change what a shot set costs, and the cost of each run is shown before you start it.
The maths flips on colourways. A studio day is priced once whether you shoot one frame or one finish. A frame line with a black, tortoise, crystal and havana version of the same shape is four shoots at per-image pricing and four runs of one workflow at credit pricing. One number to distrust. There is no credible, methodologically sourced return rate for eyewear as a standalone ecommerce category. The figures circulating, including large claimed reductions from virtual try-on, trace to try-on vendor marketing pages with no sample, no method and no date. How to run the shoot end to end
Five steps, one source frame per SKU.
- Shoot or source one clean reference per frame. Front-on, sharp, evenly lit, lenses wiped. Everything downstream inherits its errors, so fix them here.
- Generate the angle set. Three-quarter, temple profile and folded from the single reference, then check hinge count and arm branding at 100%.
- Build the worn frames. Front-on and three-quarter on a face, with the reflection kept off the eye line and the eyes readable through a clear lens.
- Repeat per colourway, not per shot. The shot list is fixed. Only the finish changes, which is the whole cost argument for the category.
- Audit against the rules before upload. White background, 85% fill, 1,000 pixels or more on the longest side for zoom, no props or badging that are not part of the product, and a tint that matches the SKU you ship.
Build that sequence once and it stops being a shoot. You set the brand rules, the model, the light and the crop on the first frame.
