Hat product photography is the image set that sells caps, beanies and bucket hats. One rule shapes all of it. Amazon files hats as accessories, so the main image has to be shot flat and off-model, with no visible mannequin and no ghost mannequin either. That leaves you rebuilding the crown from inside the hat, which is the part no lighting guide covers.
Every headwear guide sells you a head. Cast a model, shoot the worn portrait, lead with it. Then the listing goes live and the shot you were told to lead with is the one shot the platform will not accept in that slot.
There is a real problem underneath the rule, and it is why headwear is harder than it looks. A cap has no rest shape. Lay a six-panel cap on a table and the crown folds into a disc, taking the profile and the brim line with it. Those three things are what the buyer is paying for.

What is hat product photography?
Hat product photography covers baseball caps, snapbacks, dad caps, five-panels, truckers, beanies and bucket hats. The image set has to answer three questions that a flat garment never raises: what shape does it hold, how does the brim sit, and how does the logo sit on a curved surface.
The category sits in an awkward gap. A hat is apparel in the sense that someone wears it, and a rigid object in the sense that it has a designed silhouette that exists whether or not a person is under it. Marketplaces resolve that gap by calling it an accessory, which puts it in the same bucket as a belt.
That classification is not a filing detail. It decides your main image, and the main image decides the shoot.
The rule that sets your main image
Amazon’s Clothing and Accessories imaging guide splits its instructions by product type. Adult apparel goes on a model. Kids, baby, accessories, multipacks and sets go off-model. That split appears in the main image requirements list, under the heading of things that may result in an ASIN being removed from search.
Hats are named explicitly. The laydown page instructs that the product be shot off-figure, described as flat, “using pins, liner, or stuffing, and using seams as a guideline to maintain symmetry from left to right”, and it lists the categories it applies to: accessories including scarves, belts, hats, ties and cold-weather accessories (Amazon Seller Imaging Guide, Clothing & Accessories, Spring 2021, retrieved August 2026).
The prohibited list closes the obvious escape route. Visible mannequins are banned from main images. Ghost mannequins are banned as a separate line item on the same list. Read the three rules together and the brief writes itself. No head, no mannequin, no invisible mannequin, and the crown still has to look like a crown. Amazon has told you to solve it with pins, liner or stuffing, which is a polite way of saying you are going to rebuild the hat from the inside and photograph the reconstruction.
The rest of the specs are the standard apparel set: pure white background at RGB 255, the product filling at least 85% of the frame, at least 1,600 pixels in height so zoom works, no more than 10,000 pixels on the longest side, and JPEG preferred over TIFF. Five images minimum and seven maximum per product. Amazon even publishes the camera settings it expects, at f8 to f11, 400 ISO and 1/160 to 1/250. One caution on that pixel floor, because it is the number most often quoted back wrongly. Amazon’s own style guides disagree with each other. Documents still hosted on Amazon domains variously state 1,000, 1,001, 1,500 and 1,600 pixels, one 2019 file contradicts itself between two of its own pages, and the stated maximum is 3,900 in one guide and 10,000 in another. Every one of them carries a line saying it is for informational purposes only. Master well above the highest number you find and the disagreement stops costing you anything.
Off Amazon the rule relaxes and the problem does not. Shopify recommends 2048 by 2048 pixels for square product images and needs more than 800 by 800 for zoom, inside limits of 5000 by 5000 pixels and 20 MB (help.shopify.com, August 2026). Your own PDP can lead with a worn shot. The crown still collapses on the table for the laydown you also need.
Why a cap fights the flat shot
Most product categories have a rest shape. A bottle stands. A shoe sits. A sweater lies flat and the flat version is a fair representation of the garment. A cap is the exception, because its shape is a negative space designed around a head that you have been told to remove.
Three things vanish when you put a cap down and shoot straight at it.
The crown profile goes first. The front panel is what carries the logo and the height. Photographed flat with no support, it folds backwards and the cap reads as a brim with a fabric puddle behind it.
The brim curve reads as flat. A pre-curved visor is curved in two directions at once, and a top-down frame flattens both. The shopper comparing a curved brim against a flat brim cannot tell your two SKUs apart.
The side profile disappears entirely. Panel seams, eyelets and the side embroidery all live on a surface that is edge-on to the camera in a laydown.
This is why headwear laydowns get stuffed rather than styled. The stuffing is not a shortcut. It is the shot. Amazon’s own instruction names it, and the same page tells you to align on the seams so the two sides match, which is the tell that separates a considered laydown from a cap dropped on paper.

What your tech pack tells you, and what it does not
Before you book anything, look up one value on the spec sheet. It is not the one most guides point at.
The profile label will not help you. Low, mid and high profile read like a measurement scale, and the inch ranges that circulate online, usually 2 to 3 inches for low and 3 to 4 for mid, do not appear on any manufacturer’s own documentation. Manufacturers treat profile as a pattern name. Richardson defines HI-PRO as a “retro crown shape with tall front panels and sloped back panels” and its structured casual line as a “lower profile crown shape with buckram lined front panels”, which are shape descriptions and not heights (Richardson 2023 Product Line Catalog, retrieved August 2026).
Where real numbers do get published, they are measured in a way that surprises most people: over the curve of the crown, from the button on top down to the visor seam at centre front. That puts actual caps in a 6 1/2 to 6 7/8 inch band, and the labels do not track it. New Era’s NE207, sold as a Low Profile trucker, publishes a 6 7/8 inch crown. Richardson’s 112, a MID-PRO, publishes 6 3/4. The low profile cap is the taller one (SanMar published spec sheets, August 2026).
Buckram is the value that matters. Buckram is the stiff woven interlining fused into the front two panels of the crown to make a structured cap (outdoorcap.com, August 2026). A cap that has it holds its own shape on the table. A cap that does not, which is what unstructured and dad caps are, collapses as soon as you put it down. Richardson says it plainly, describing its relaxed line as a “low profile, relaxed crown shape without structure”.

Beanies belong on that last row for a reason. A knitted hat is not a construction problem, it is a texture problem, and it fails the way every knit fails. The stitch beats against the sensor and the pattern is the first thing compression discards. The shot list for a headwear drop
Seven frames cover a cap listing. The first is fixed by the platform. The rest are yours.
- Front laydown, stuffed, off-model. The main image. Front panel upright, brim forward, seams symmetrical, white background, 85% frame fill.
- Three-quarter angle. The frame that proves the crown is three-dimensional and shows how the logo wraps. If you ship one alternate, ship this one.
- Side profile. Panel seams, eyelets, brim curvature in silhouette. This is the frame that separates a curved brim from a flat one. Worth knowing when you brief a supplier: the manufacturers call it the visor, not the brim. Richardson’s spec field is VISOR with values such as PRECURVED and FLAT, UK and Australian makers say peak, and brim is reserved for 360 degree headwear (outdoorcap.com and Richardson 2023 Product Line Catalog, August 2026).
- Back. The closure is a specification the buyer is choosing on. Snapback, strapback, buckle or fitted all look different and all matter.
- Underbrim. Contrast underbrims are a design feature people pay for, and they are invisible in every other frame.
- Embroidery macro. Close enough to show stitch direction and whether the puff is raised. On a merch cap this frame sells the product.
- Worn shot. For your PDP, your ads and your social. Not for the Amazon main slot.
Two notes on ordering. The worn shot is last on this list and first in most guides, which is the whole disagreement. It is a genuinely valuable image, because scale and fit are hard to read from a laydown, and it belongs everywhere except the one slot the platform has ruled on.
The other note is on colourways. Headwear drops in six to twelve colours off one pattern, which means the shot list above multiplies fast. Seven frames across eight colourways is 56 images from what is really one product. That multiplication is the cost problem, not the individual shot. Embroidery decides your resolution
The logo is why a cap exists commercially. It is also the highest frequency detail in the frame, and high frequency detail is what every stage of the pipeline discards.
Two constructions behave differently. Flat embroidery sits at the fabric surface and reads mostly as colour. 3D puff embroidery is stitched over foam, usually 2mm or 3mm on caps, so it stands proud and casts its own shadow. Digitising guides put the minimum letter height for puff at 0.25 to 0.35 inches, with a minimum column width of 2mm to 3mm needed to trap the foam at all (impactdigitizing.com, August 2026).
Three practical consequences.
Light across the logo, not at it. Puff earns its price from the shadow it casts. Front-on light flattens it into the same image as flat embroidery, and you have paid for a construction the photo does not show.
Shoot the macro closer than feels necessary. The rule is the same one that governs any fine repeating detail: more pixels per stitch. Amazon’s 1,600 pixel floor is a zoom threshold, not a quality target.
Check the logo at thumbnail size. A five-letter wordmark in quarter-inch puff is legible in the macro and gone on a search results grid. If the wordmark is the brand, one frame in the set has to carry it at a size that survives.
Where AI holds on headwear, and where it breaks
Generative work does well on some of this list and badly on one part of it, and the split is sharp enough to plan around.
Where it holds. Colourways, backgrounds, scenes and additional angles from a good source frame. A cap is a rigid, symmetrical object with a simple silhouette, which is close to the easiest case a model gets. Recolouring a navy cap to olive across a drop is reliable work. So is putting a shot you already have into a lifestyle setting.
Where it breaks. The logo. A model reproduces the impression of an embroidered mark rather than the mark itself, so letterforms shift, a monogram loses a serif, and stitch direction goes wherever it likes. On a plain cap that is a small artefact. On a merch cap the logo is the entire product and a redrawn logo is a misrepresented one.
Where it needs checking. Brim curvature across a set. Generate eight colourways and two of them will come back with a slightly different brim break, which reads as a different product rather than a different colour. Panel seam count is worth a glance too, since a five-panel and a six-panel differ by one visible line.

Caps price as accessories, and studios publish that tier openly. The per-frame rate is at the low end of apparel, because a cap is small, quick to light and needs no fitting. Volume is what hurts. Eight colourways at seven frames is 56 images, and at $38 each that is $2,128 for a drop containing one pattern.
Then add the shape problem, which is where headwear budgets actually diverge. The invisible-support look is priced three completely different ways depending on who does it. - Move additional angles third, and check the brim break on each one.
- Keep the main laydown and the embroidery macro as real captures until a full drop has been verified against the physical product.
